Where to stay in Castellfollit and the Garrotxa

You can see Castellfollit in a morning, but the Garrotxa deserves at least one night. We explain which area suits your trip and list real places to stay, checked on their official websites.

First, choose your area

The Garrotxa is small and everything is close, so the question is less which hotel than where you want to base yourself. These are the six bases that make most sense for visiting Castellfollit, with road distances from the village:

  • The village itself, if you want to wake up on top of the cliff.
  • Sant Joan les Fonts (about 4 km), if you're after a farmhouse with plenty of space.
  • Olot (about 7.5 km, according to the town council), if you want choice, amenities and good bus connections.
  • Santa Pau (about 19 km to the village), if you want to sleep at the foot of the volcanoes.
  • Besalú (about 14 km), if you're travelling as a couple and like the idea of another medieval town.
  • The Vall d'en Bas (about 17 km to Sant Esteve d'en Bas), if countryside, cycling and the greenway are your thing.

The cards for all these places to stay are at the bottom of this page. They all appear on Turisme Garrotxa or on the town council's list, and we checked them on their official websites in October 2026.

In Castellfollit de la Roca

Who it suits: anyone who wants to see the village first thing or in the last light without getting in the car, and anyone arriving by bus, as the stop is in the village itself.

  • Fonda Ca la Paula, on Plaça de Sant Roc, next to the Torre del Rellotge. It's a family-run inn with a restaurant, single, double and triple rooms, and free parking for guests. The town council records that the building has been an inn since 1870.
  • Can Castell, three holiday apartments on Plaça del Cingle, in the building that stands on the site of the old castle, above the cliff. For anyone who wants their own kitchen, right in the old town.

The town council's list also includes other holiday lets in the village that don't have their own website; you can see it on its On dormir? ("Where to stay?") page.

In Sant Joan les Fonts: farmhouses close by

Who it suits: families, groups of friends and anyone travelling with a dog. You'll need a car.

  • Mas Violella, an 18th-century farmhouse built of volcanic stone between Sant Joan les Fonts and Castellfollit, with several units that can be combined and an enclosed garden designed with dogs in mind too.
  • Mas Molera, a restored farmhouse halfway between Olot and Castellfollit, with a large house for ten people and two smaller houses, a pool and outdoor areas.

In Olot: the most practical base

Who it suits: anyone travelling without a car, anyone who wants restaurants and shops close at hand, and anyone planning to spend several days on the volcanoes. TEISA links Olot with Barcelona, Girona and Figueres, and its lines stop in Castellfollit.

  • Hotel Borrell, a town-centre hotel about 50 metres from the Olot–Girona greenway, with a garage for motorbikes and bicycles. A good choice for cycle tourists.
  • Hotel Estació, central, on a quiet street just a step from the shopping area.
  • Hotel Can Blanc, a small hotel in a renovated 19th-century farmhouse with gardens, in the La Deu area on the edge of town. Quieter; better if you have a car.
  • Alberg Olot Xanascat, the youth hostel run by Catalonia's public hostel network, in a Noucentista building from 1920–1922 on Passeig de Barcelona, five minutes from the centre, with rooms of two to ten beds. Handy if you're travelling as a group or without a car.
  • Càmping La Fageda, a family campsite with bungalows and pitches, very close to the Fageda d'en Jordà. Turisme Garrotxa places it in Olot, about 3 km from the centre towards Santa Pau.

In Santa Pau: at the foot of the volcanoes

Who it suits: groups who want the volcanoes and the Fageda d'en Jordà on the doorstep. Best with a car.

  • Mas Cantallops, on the Mascou road, in the municipality of Santa Pau: two rural houses, sleeping up to 18 people in total according to its website, at the foot of the Croscat and Santa Margarida volcanoes, with space to store bikes.

In Besalú: for couples

Who it suits: couples and short breaks. Besalú is a quarter of an hour away by car and has its own medieval centre for an evening stroll.

  • Els Jardins de la Martana, a small hotel in an early 20th-century building across the old bridge, with views over the town. According to the hotel itself, it is the only building on the far side of the bridge, and Turisme Garrotxa says it accepts pets.
  • Hotel Casa Marcial, in the historic centre, with a garden and a pool; Turisme Garrotxa says it only accepts guests aged over 14.

In the Vall d'en Bas: countryside and greenway

Who it suits: families, cyclists and anyone who wants to sleep surrounded by meadows. The Carrilet greenway, which follows the line of the old Olot–Girona railway, runs through the valley, and the Bus Transversal de la Garrotxa links Sant Esteve d'en Bas with Olot and Castellfollit.

  • Mas Garganta, a farmhouse with views over the valley, on the La Pinya road, with single, double, triple and family rooms, a vegetable garden and a pool. According to Turisme Garrotxa, it is open from spring to December.
  • Hotel Vall de Bas, on a rustic estate in Joanetes surrounded by fields, with a restaurant serving local produce.
  • Alberg Vall d'en Bas Xanascat, a public-network youth hostel next to the greenway, with four-bed rooms with their own bathroom. Very practical for cyclists.

How we put this list together

We only include places to stay that appear in the official sources for the area or the village and whose websites we have checked. We don't publish prices, stars or ratings, because they change and we can't keep them up to date. No place to stay has paid to be listed. If a link is ever an affiliate link, we explain it in how this guide is funded.

If you're not yet sure what to do the next day, our nearby sights page has ideas for each base, and plan your visit tells you how long to allow for each thing.
